Sitting atop the Mercedes-Benz SUV hierarchy is the spacious and indisputably luxurious GLS-Class. It’s all new for 2020 and it has big shoes to fill—we’ve named the outgoing GLS-Class to our 10Best Trucks and SUVs list for three straight years—but our first impressions of this new big Benz are very good.
Two models will be offered—the six-cylinder GLS450 and the eight-cylinder GLS580—and both feature electric-assist hybrid powertrains. The GLS450’s turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six is silky smooth and good for 362 horsepower when combined with its electric motor; the GLS580 is far more powerful, making 483 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 and electric motor. Despite its size, the GLS-Class is easy to hustle on a twisty road but its ride avoids being overly sporty and harsh over bumps. All GLS models come standard with an air suspension system, but Mercedes also offers a trick new system called E-Active Body Control that utilizes a forward-facing camera to scan for bumps ahead and can adjust the suspension to better damp out such imperfections. It’s cool but it’s expensive, and many might find the standard setup plenty smooth enough.
Borrowing a dashboard and cockpit layout from the similarly new GLE-Class SUV, the new GLS-Class is far more modern than the 2019 model it replaces. Two huge 12.3-inch digital displays fill the majority of the dashboard: One serves as a reconfigurable gauge display for the driver while the other handles infotainment duties and runs Mercedes-Benz’s new MBUX software that features an iPhone-like virtual assistant. The GLS-Class’s cabin can be outfitted with seats for seven or six with the optional second-row captain’s chairs. Passenger space is generous in the first and second rows; the third row, while not as spacious as the second, can accommodate an adult without too much complaining—something that can’t be said of the third row in the GLS’s main rival, the BMW X7.
