A doc fee, short for documentation fee, is a charge dealers add to cover the cost of processing your sale paperwork, including title, registration, and contract preparation. In New Jersey, there is no legal cap on doc fees, so they can range from $200 to $900 or more depending on the dealership. The fee is negotiable at most dealers, even if they tell you otherwise.
