Total loss protection is coverage that provides up to $2,500 toward a replacement vehicle if your car is totaled or stolen. Unlike standard GAP insurance, total loss protection also includes replacement vehicle sourcing service—we find your next car from our 350+ dealer network and deliver it in 10-14 days instead of you spending 4-6 weeks shopping dealerships while in crisis mode.

When your car is declared a total loss by insurance (due to accident, theft, flood, or other covered event), we verify your coverage, apply the $2,500 credit toward your replacement vehicle, and handle the entire sourcing and delivery process so you're back on the road faster without draining your savings.

Total loss protection is included FREE on every vehicle you buy or lease through Vantage Auto Group. The $2,500 value coverage costs you nothing—it's automatically included at no extra charge on every deal.

The value: If you use it even once, you get your money back plus the time saved (10-14 days vs. 4-6 weeks shopping) and stress avoided.

Total loss protection and GAP insurance both address the gap between what insurance pays and what you owe, but they work differently:

GAP Insurance:

  • Covers the FULL difference between insurance payout and loan/lease balance (no dollar limit)
  • Only provides financial coverage for the gap
  • You're on your own to find a replacement vehicle
  • You still spend 4-6 weeks shopping dealerships
  • Typically costs $400-$700

Which do you need? For most leases and financed vehicles with 10-20% down payment, total loss protection's $2,500 coverage is sufficient. If you put $0 down on an expensive vehicle ($50,000+) or have a high loan-to-value ratio, you might want both GAP and total loss protection. We'll show you the math for your specific situation.

The average turnaround from total loss declaration to replacement vehicle delivery is 5-12 days. Here's the typical timeline:

Day 1: You contact us after insurance declares total loss
Days 2: We search 350+ dealers for matching vehicles
Day 3: You review and approve replacement options
Days 4: We prep the approved vehicle
Days 5: Delivery to your driveway

Sometimes faster: If we find an exact match quickly, we've delivered replacements in as little as 8 days.

Rarely longer: For rare or specialty vehicles, it may take 15-20 days to locate the right match.

Compare this to doing it yourself: Most people spend 4-6 weeks visiting dealerships, comparing prices, negotiating under time pressure, and dealing with the entire purchase process while managing insurance claims and being without a car. Our 5-12 day average saves you 3-5 weeks of stress.

Total loss protection activates when your insurance company officially declares your vehicle a total loss. This typically includes:

Accident damage: When repair costs exceed 70-80% of the vehicle's value (percentage varies by state), insurance declares it totaled rather than repairing it.

Theft (not recovered): If your car is stolen and not recovered within 30 days (timeframe varies by insurance policy), it's declared a total loss.

Natural disaster: Flood damage, fire damage, hurricane damage, hail damage (severe), tornado, or other natural disasters where the vehicle is destroyed or damaged beyond economical repair.

Other covered events: Any situation where your insurance company makes an official total loss determination according to your policy terms.

What's NOT covered: Mechanical failure without accident/damage, normal wear and tear, voluntary surrender of vehicle, or situations where insurance doesn't declare a total loss.

The key: Your insurance company must officially declare the vehicle a total loss. We don't make this determination—your insurance adjuster does based on repair costs vs. vehicle value.

No. You have three options for your replacement vehicle:

Option 1: Same vehicle (most common choice)
Same year, make, model, and similar trim level. Example: Your 2021 Honda Accord was totaled → we source another 2021 Honda Accord with comparable features and mileage.

Option 2: Similar vehicle
Different trim level, color, or minor features. Example: Your 2021 Accord EX was totaled → we source a 2021 Accord Sport or LX, or a 2022 Accord EX.

Option 3: Different vehicle entirely
Upgrade, downgrade, or change brands. For example: your Accord was totaled → you decide you want a Toyota Camry or Honda CR-V instead.

Your $2,500 credit applies regardless of which option you choose. The credit is toward your next vehicle purchase or lease through Vantage, not locked to a specific make/model.

Most customers choose Option 1 (same vehicle) because they liked what they had and want continuity, but you have complete flexibility.

You can hold your $2,500 credit for up to 12 months from the date your total loss was declared and use it whenever you're ready.

Common scenarios:

Waiting for new model year: Your car is totaled in March. You want to wait until the 2026 models come out in fall. Hold your credit until then.

Financial timing: You need a few months to rebuild savings or improve credit before taking on a new car payment. Your credit stays active.

Uncertainty: You're not sure what you want next and need time to research. Take up to a year to decide.

Using alternative transportation: You're borrowing a family member's car temporarily or using public transit and aren't in immediate need of replacement.

Important: After 12 months, the credit expires if unused. We'll remind you at 9 months and 11 months that your credit is expiring soon so you don't lose it.

If you know you definitely won't need a car within 12 months, this protection may not be the right fit for you.

The $2,500 credit only applies to vehicles sourced through Vantage from our 350+ dealer network. You cannot take the credit to a random dealer outside our network.

Why this restriction exists:

We're providing two things: (1) the $2,500 credit, and (2) the sourcing service that gets you wholesale pricing and fast delivery. If you go to a dealer outside our network, we can't control the pricing (you'll likely pay retail markup) and can't provide the sourcing service that makes this program valuable.

What this means:
When we source your replacement, you're getting wholesale pricing from our dealer network—typically $1,500-$3,000 below retail. The $2,500 credit plus wholesale pricing savings means you're often saving $4,000-$5,000 total compared to walking into a random dealer.

If you find a car you want elsewhere:
Tell us the specific vehicle (year/make/model/VIN if you have it) and we'll see if we can source the exact same car through our network. Often we can find the identical vehicle or something equivalent at better pricing.

For most people: Total loss protection alone is sufficient.

You might want both if:

$0 down on expensive vehicle ($50,000+): If you put no money down on a $60,000 luxury SUV, the gap between what you owe and what insurance pays could exceed $2,500 in the first 12-18 months. Total loss protection covers up to $2,500; GAP insurance covers the rest.

High loan-to-value ratio: If you financed 100% of the vehicle price (no down payment) or rolled negative equity from a previous car into the loan, you might owe significantly more than the car's value if totaled early.

Luxury/exotic vehicles: High-end vehicles can depreciate $10,000-$15,000 in the first year. If you have minimal down payment, the gap could exceed $2,500.

We'll show you the math: When you're buying or leasing, we'll calculate your specific gap exposure. If total loss protection's $2,500 limit covers your worst-case scenario, you're good. If the potential gap is larger, we'll recommend adding GAP insurance as well.

Example of when you need both:
$60,000 BMW X5, $0 down, 36-month lease. If totaled in month 6: you owe $58,000, insurance pays $52,000, gap is $6,000. Total loss protection covers $2,500, GAP covers the other $3,500.

Example of when you don't need both:
$35,000 Honda CR-V, $5,000 down, 36-month lease. If totaled in month 6: you owe $29,000, insurance pays $28,000, gap is $1,000. Total loss protection's $2,500 limit covers it entirely.

You're covered for the full term of your lease or the first 36 months of ownership (whichever is shorter).

  • 24-month lease = 24 months of coverage
  • 36-month lease = 36 months of coverage
  • 48-month lease = 48 months of coverage
  • Purchased vehicle = 36 months from purchase date

Then total loss protection doesn't apply. Coverage only activates when your insurance company makes an official total loss determination.

Insurance declares a vehicle totaled when:
Repair costs exceed a certain percentage of the car's value (typically 70-80% depending on your state). If repairs cost $15,000 but your car is worth $20,000, they'll likely repair it. If repairs cost $18,000, they'll likely total it.

Gray area situations:
Sometimes it's borderline whether insurance will total a car or repair it. Factors include:

  • State regulations (each state has different total loss thresholds)
  • Insurance company policies (some are more aggressive about totaling cars)
  • Vehicle value calculations (depends on mileage, condition, market)

If insurance decides to repair:
Your comprehensive/collision coverage handles the repairs. Total loss protection doesn't apply because there's no total loss.

If you disagree with insurance's decision:
You can contest their determination (example: you think repairs won't properly restore the vehicle), but ultimately insurance makes the final call based on their adjuster's assessment.

We don't negotiate with your insurance company on your behalf (that's between you and them, or you can hire a public adjuster if needed). We don't file claims or handle insurance paperwork directly.

Our role: Once insurance declares the total loss and settles on a payout, we take over the replacement vehicle process so you don't have to spend 4-6 weeks shopping dealerships during an already stressful time.

No. Total loss protection is non-transferable. The coverage stays with you (the original policyholder), not with the vehicle.

Why it's non-transferable:
The protection is tied to your specific vehicle purchase or lease agreement with Vantage. If you sell the car to someone else, they weren't party to that agreement and don't automatically inherit the coverage.

What happens if you sell:

If you got it FREE with Vantage lease/purchase: Nothing to transfer. The coverage ends when you no longer own the vehicle.

If you paid $2,500 to add it: You can get a prorated refund based on remaining coverage. Example: You paid $2,500 for 36 months. You sell after 18 months. You'd receive approximately $1,250 back (18 months remaining ÷ 36 months total × $2,500).

What the new owner needs to do:
If the buyer wants total loss protection, they would need to purchase their own coverage (either through us if they're buying from us, or through another provider).

Trading in vs. selling privately:
If you're trading your protected car in to buy another car through Vantage, your new vehicle automatically gets total loss protection included free. You don't "transfer" the old coverage—you get new coverage on the new vehicle.

Your total loss protection coverage remains active even if you move to a different state. We deliver vehicles nationwide, so geographic location doesn't affect your coverage or our ability to source your replacement.

What you need to do if you move:

Update your address with us: Let us know your new location so if you need to file a claim, we have current contact information.

Update your insurance: Notify your auto insurance company of your address change (required by law and your policy). Insurance rates and coverage may change based on your new location.

Update your lease/loan: If you're leasing or financing, notify the lender of your address change.

State-specific considerations:
Some states have different total loss thresholds (the percentage of vehicle value at which insurance declares it totaled). Your insurance company will follow the rules of the state where the loss occurs, but this doesn't affect your total loss protection coverage—you still get the $2,500 credit and replacement sourcing service regardless of which state you're in.

Example: You leased a car in New Jersey, got free total loss protection, then moved to Texas. Your car is totaled in Texas. Your coverage is still active, we still provide the $2,500 credit, and we still source your replacement and deliver it to your Texas address.

You're fully covered. There is no waiting period for total loss protection. Coverage begins the day your lease or purchase agreement starts.

Real scenario:
You lease a new car from Vantage on January 15. Total loss protection is included free. On February 3 (19 days later), you're in an accident and the car is declared totaled by insurance. Your total loss protection is active—you receive the $2,500 credit toward your replacement and we source your next vehicle.

Why there's no waiting period:
Accidents and theft don't wait. You're at risk from day one, so protection starts from day one.

What about fraud concerns?
Some insurance products have waiting periods specifically to prevent fraud. Total loss protection doesn't need this because:

  1. Insurance must officially declare a total loss (not your decision)
  2. Insurance investigates all claims for fraud
  3. We're not paying you cash—we're providing credit toward another vehicle through us

Most common question:
"What if someone intentionally totals the car just to get out of the lease early?" This doesn't work because: (a) insurance fraud is a crime and investigators catch it, (b) your insurance rates skyrocket after an at-fault total loss claim, (c) you still need another car and you're not pocketing cash—you're using credit toward a replacement.

Bottom line: If disaster strikes in month 1 or month 35, you're covered equally.

I wish I knew leasing a car could be this easy years ago! I still can’t believe how seamless my experience was with Sean. He was extremely responsive and got me the best price compared to other dealers I had been talking to. The delivery of the car was on the exact day and time I asked for, even though it was a national holiday. I have already referred him to so many of my friends and family. So glad someone referred me to Sean. All the stress that comes with buying/leasing a car is now a thing of the past!
