Can a dealer buy a car from me without a title in NJ?
Most dealers will not purchase a vehicle without a clear title in hand. However, some dealers and car buying services will work with you to process a lien payoff simultaneously with the purchase, meaning they pay off your remaining loan balance and issue you the equity difference. If the car has no lien but you simply lost the title, many dealers will direct you to obtain a duplicate title first. A few services specializing in purchasing vehicles with title issues exist, but they typically offer below-market prices to account for the additional paperwork risk they are absorbing.
