What is the difference between a PHEV and a regular hybrid?
A regular hybrid (HEV) uses a small battery that recharges automatically through regenerative braking and the gas engine. It cannot be plugged in and the electric motor only assists the gas engine; you cannot drive on electricity alone for any meaningful distance. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) has a larger battery that you charge by plugging in, allowing you to drive 20 to 50 miles on electric power only before the gas engine kicks in. PHEVs offer the best of both worlds but cost more upfront.
