How To Sell a Junk Car or a Car That Doesn't Run

A non-running car still has value. Here is how to get the most out of it in New

Essential Takeaways

  • Junk car buyers, scrap yards, and salvage dealers all come to you and handle towing
  • You need a title in NJ to legally sell any vehicle, including junk cars
  • Get quotes from at least three buyers; prices vary significantly for the same car
  • Parting out the car yourself takes more effort but can yield far more than a scrap quote
  • Cars with valuable parts (engine, transmission, catalytic converter) are worth more than scrap weight alone
  • Watch for buyers who quote high then reduce the offer at pickup; get any offer confirmed in writing

A Junk Car Is Not Worthless

Even a car that will not start, has major mechanical issues, or has been in an accident has some value. The question is how much, and how you go about getting it. The approach you take, scrap yard versus private sale versus junk car buyer, can mean the difference between $200 and $1,500 for the exact same vehicle.

Your Options for Selling a Non-Running Car

Junk Car Buyers

These are services, often operating under names like We Buy Junk Cars or Junk Car Medics, that purchase non-running vehicles for cash. They come to your location, bring their own tow truck, and pay you on the spot. The process is fast and requires minimal effort on your part.

The downside is that junk car buyers typically offer at or near scrap value. They need enough margin to transport the car and resell it. Offers are usually in the $150 to $600 range for most non-running vehicles, higher for newer models with valuable components.

Scrap Yards

Scrap yards pay based on the car's weight in metal. Current scrap metal prices fluctuate, but a typical car at scrap weight yields $150 to $500. You either drive or tow the car to the yard yourself, or arrange for their pickup service. Scrap is the floor value for any vehicle.

Salvage Dealers

Salvage dealers buy non-running cars and either resell them whole to rebuilders, part them out, or send them to auction. Their offers tend to be higher than straight scrap because they are capturing part value, not just metal weight. If your car has a sought-after engine, transmission, or body panels, a salvage dealer may offer considerably more than a junk buyer or scrap yard.

Parting It Out Yourself

If your car has valuable components and you have the time and ability, selling parts individually is usually the highest-yield option. Catalytic converters, engines, transmissions, wheels, doors, and electronics can all be sold separately on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or to local mechanics. This takes more effort and time but can multiply what you would have received from a single scrap offer.

How to Get the Best Price

The key is getting multiple quotes before you commit to any buyer. Call or submit online to at least three junk car services. Provide the same information to each: year, make, model, mileage, location, and what is wrong with the car. Compare the quotes side by side and pick the best offer.

Watch for bait-and-switch tactics. Some buyers quote a high number over the phone and then revise down at pickup, claiming the car is in worse condition than described. If a buyer wants to reduce their offer on arrival, you have the right to decline and call the next bidder. Get confirmed quotes in writing or via text before scheduling a pickup.

What You Need to Sell a Junk Car in NJ

A title is required in New Jersey to transfer ownership of any vehicle, even a junk car. If you do not have the title, apply for a duplicate through the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission before selling. You can also see our post on selling a car without a title in NJ for more detail on your options.

Some buyers will still make an offer without a title, but you will likely receive less, and some may require you to sign an affidavit of ownership. Having the title ready removes friction and protects you legally.

What Makes a Junk Car More Valuable

These factors increase what your non-running car may be worth:

  • Low mileage (engine and drivetrain are more likely usable)
  • Popular make and model (more buyers for parts)
  • Catalytic converter present and intact (high scrap value on its own)
  • Recent model year (more demand for parts)
  • Minimal body damage (panels, doors, and glass retain value)

If you want to understand your car's baseline value before calling buyers, check your vehicle here. Even non-running vehicles can return a rough estimate.

Pro Tip from Sean

Before you call the first junk car buyer you find on Google, spend five minutes checking whether your catalytic converter is still on the car. Catalytic converters contain platinum, palladium, and rhodium, and they can be worth $100 to $500 on their own to a recycler. Some junk buyers factor this in automatically; others do not mention it. Know what you have before you negotiate.

My name is Israel and I regret using this car broker. After financing my vehicle, they failed to help me obtain my license plates and have been unresponsive to my requests for assistance. Once the sale was completed, it felt like customer service completely disappeared. Buying a car is a major purchase, and I expected support until the registration process was finished. I would not recommend this broker based on my experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your best options for a non-running car are junk car buyers, scrap yards, and salvage dealers. These buyers come to you, handle towing, and pay cash. Get quotes from at least two or three buyers since prices vary. You will need the title to complete the sale. If the car has usable parts, a private sale to a mechanic or car enthusiast may yield more than a straight scrap offer.

Junk car value depends on the vehicle's weight (scrap metal value), the demand for its parts, and current metal prices. A typical non-running car might fetch $200 to $800 from a scrap yard, though vehicles with valuable parts or drivetrains in demand can be worth more. Get quotes from multiple buyers; the spread can be hundreds of dollars for the same car.

Yes, most junk car buyers and salvage services offer free towing and come to your location to pick up the vehicle. This is standard practice in the industry. You provide the title, they haul the car, and you receive payment on the spot. Confirm the pickup fee policy before agreeing; reputable buyers include towing at no charge.

In New Jersey, a title is required to transfer ownership of any vehicle, including junk cars. If you have lost the title, you can apply for a duplicate through the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission before selling. Some scrap dealers will accept a car without a title in certain circumstances, but you may receive a lower offer and face additional scrutiny.

Scrapping a car means selling it to a scrap yard for its metal weight, typically the lowest-value option. Selling for parts means either parting the car out yourself (listing individual components) or selling to a salvage dealer who does the parting. Parting out takes more time and effort but can yield significantly more money, especially if the car has newer or in-demand components like an engine, transmission, or catalytic converter.
