Can I sell a car in New Jersey if I lost the title?
Yes, but you must obtain a duplicate title before you can legally sell the vehicle. In New Jersey, you can apply for a duplicate title through the NJ MVC by submitting Form OS/SS-52 with a $60 fee. If there is an outstanding lien on the vehicle, the lien holder must be involved in the title replacement process. Some dealers and title-buying services will work with you to obtain a replacement title as part of the sale, but private buyers will typically require a clean title before they complete a purchase.
