Mazda CX-5 vs CX-50: Which Should You Get in 2026?

30 NJ car lease terms explained in plain English, with the math and the NJ-specific rules.

Essential Takeaways

  • The CX-5 is the refined city crossover with a lower starting price and better fuel economy
  • The CX-50 is wider, more rugged, and built for adventure with standard AWD
  • CX-5 lease payments start around $349/month through Vantage Auto Group
  • CX-50 lease payments start around $380/month through Vantage Auto Group
  • Both share the same 2.5L engine but the CX-50 has more ground clearance and cargo space

CX-5 vs CX-50: Quick Overview

Mazda sells two compact crossovers that look similar on paper but serve different drivers. The CX-5 is the polished urban commuter. The CX-50 is the outdoor-oriented adventurer. Both are excellent vehicles, but picking the wrong one means paying for features you do not need or missing ones you do.

Want real numbers on your next car?

Tell us what you're looking for and we'll source your options across 350+ dealer partners. It's free, and there's no obligation.

Size and Dimensions

The CX-50 is noticeably larger than the CX-5. It is 5.9 inches longer, 3.1 inches wider, and sits 1.4 inches higher off the ground. That translates to more cargo space (31.4 vs 30.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats) and a more commanding road presence.

If you need to navigate tight parking garages or narrow city streets regularly, the CX-5 is easier to maneuver. If you want more room for gear and a vehicle that feels substantial on the highway, the CX-50 wins.

Performance and Drivetrain

Both vehicles offer the same 2.5L four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower. The CX-5 is available in FWD or AWD. The CX-50 comes standard with AWD on every trim.

The CX-50 also gets a turbocharged 2.5L option making 256 horsepower. The CX-5 does not offer a turbo. If acceleration matters to you, the CX-50 Turbo is the clear choice.

Off-Road and Adventure Capability

The CX-50 was designed with outdoor adventures in mind. It has more ground clearance (8.6 vs 7.5 inches), standard roof rails rated for heavier loads, and available off-road traction assist modes. The CX-5 can handle a dirt road, but the CX-50 can handle a trail.

Interior and Technology

Both vehicles share similar interior quality and technology. The infotainment systems are nearly identical, and both offer heated seats, wireless Apple CarPlay, and a clean minimalist design. The CX-50 has a slightly more rugged interior aesthetic with contrast stitching and available synthetic suede.

Pricing and Lease Payments

The CX-5 starts around $30,900 MSRP. The CX-50 starts around $32,400 MSRP. Through Vantage Auto Group at broker pricing:

  • CX-5 lease: from $349/month
  • CX-50 lease: from $380/month

The monthly difference is small enough that the decision should be based on which vehicle fits your lifestyle, not the payment.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose the CX-5 if you primarily drive in the city, want the lowest possible payment, and do not need off-road capability. Choose the CX-50 if you want more space, standard AWD, available turbo power, and a vehicle that can handle weekend adventures.

Either way, leasing through Vantage Auto Group gets you broker pricing with no dealer markup. We will find the best deal across 350+ dealers.

Pro Tip from Sean

Both the CX-5 and CX-50 lease incredibly well because Mazda supports them with strong residuals. The CX-5 is the better value play if you want the lowest payment. The CX-50 is the better choice if you need AWD and want the turbo option. Either way, do not pay MSRP. Let us work with our dealer partners to find you the most competitive pricing and you will save on both.

Had the pleasure of trying Vantage Auto group to broker a vehicle for the first time and I cant recommend them enough. The experience was super easy, super quick, had a new car in my driveway within 3 days of contacting them. I worked alongside David Wagoner, one of their sales associates, who provided such a smooth experience and easy to communicate with. Please do yourself a favor, avoid the headaches of a dealership, and use Vantage for leasing or purchasing a vehicle as well as trying out their other services. Will be using them in the future for sure

David, Omar, and the team at Vantage are awesome! The process was only a couple of days and they were able to secure my lease with much better terms than what the dealer was offering direct. Would highly recommend working with them if you’re in need of a new lease!

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The CX-50 is 5.9 inches longer, 3.1 inches wider, and sits 1.4 inches higher than the CX-5. It offers more cargo space and a more commanding road presence, but the CX-5 is easier to maneuver in tight spaces.

Yes. Every CX-50 trim comes with standard all-wheel drive. The CX-5 offers AWD as an option but is also available in front-wheel drive at a lower price point.

The CX-5 typically leases for about $30/month less than the CX-50 thanks to its lower MSRP. Through Vantage Auto Group, CX-5 leases start around $349/month and CX-50 leases start around $380/month.

If the car's market value exceeds the residual value when your lease ends, you have positive equity. You can buy the car at the residual price (which is below market value) and either keep it or sell it for a profit. This happened frequently during the 2021-2023 used car market spike and can still occur with high-demand vehicles. It is one of the underappreciated benefits of leasing a car that holds its value well.

Multiply the money factor by 2,400. For example: 0.00100 x 2,400 = 2.4% APR. 0.00150 x 2,400 = 3.6% APR. 0.00250 x 2,400 = 6.0% APR. This gives you an approximate annual percentage rate that you can compare against traditional auto loan rates. The conversion is not perfectly precise, but it is close enough for comparison purposes.

Interest rate is just the cost of borrowing the principal. APR includes the interest rate plus origination fees, processing charges, and other loan costs, giving you the true annual cost of the loan for comparison purposes.

Yes. Dealers receive holdback (2-3% of MSRP) from the manufacturer after each sale, plus volume bonuses and dealer cash incentives. A dealer can sell below invoice and still make money on the transaction.

Gap insurance is worth it if you put less than 20% down, have a loan longer than 48 months, or financed negative equity from a previous vehicle. If you made a large down payment or drive a vehicle that holds its value well, you probably do not need it.

Check your lease contract first. Most lease agreements include gap coverage automatically. If yours does, buying additional gap insurance means paying for duplicate coverage you do not need.
